In Belgium, anyone who flies a drone that weighs more than 1 kg but less than 5 kg falls under the Class 2 category. This class is primarily intended for advanced hobbyists and semi-professional applications, such as aerial photography, inspections, or advanced recreational flights.
Just as with other categories, the weight of your drone is the determining factor. According to Belgian legislation, there are three main classes:
< 1 kg – Leisure use (recreational)
1–5 kg – Class 2
5 kg – Classes 1a and 1b (professional)

If you’re flying at a certified model aircraft field, the rules of that field and those of the DGLV (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) apply. In that case, the weight of your drone matters less, as long as you comply with the regulations.
Drones in this class offer more capabilities than recreational models, but do not yet meet the most stringent professional requirements. They are perfect for pilots who:
want more stability and features than those offered by lightweight drones
using drones for semi-professional photo or video productions
carry out advanced hobby projects
Please note: Class 2 drones are subject to stricter safety regulations than those for recreational use. You must take into account factors such as maximum flight altitude, distance from people and buildings, and sometimes even registration requirements.
If your drone weighs more than 5 kg or if you use it for commercial purposes at a professional level, you fall under Class 1a or 1b. This requires additional permits, training, and insurance.
Class 2 drones are an ideal stepping stone between recreational and professional flying. They offer you more possibilities and freedom, but also come with greater responsibility. By following the rules carefully, you can fly safely and in compliance with Belgian law.
