Drones have become an integral part of our skies. Whether you want to take photos from a unique perspective, just fly around a bit, or use drones as a hobby, it’s important to know the rules. In Belgium, the weight of your drone plays a particularly important role. For most recreational users, the limit is simple: under 1 kg.

Under Belgian legislation, drones are classified based on their weight. Anyone who uses their drone purely for recreational purposes falls under the recreational use category. This means that your drone must weigh less than 1 kg.
There is one exception: if you’re flying at an approved model aircraft field, the rules of that field and those of the DGLV (Directorate-General for Civil Aviation) apply. At such a field, the weight of your drone matters less, as long as you follow their regulations.
The 1-kg limit restricts your options, but there are still a few popular and powerful models that allow you to fly recreationally within the law. For example:
DJI Tello
DJI Spark
DJI Mavic Pro
DJI Mavic Pro Platinum
DJI Mavic Air
These drones are lightweight, easy to fly, and ideal for gaining experience as a hobbyist pilot.
If your drone weighs more than 1 kg or if you use it for professional purposes (such as paid photo or video productions), stricter rules apply and you fall into a higher category. In that case, you’ll often need additional permits, training, and insurance.
For most drone pilots who fly just for fun, the rule is clear: stay under 1 kg and follow the basic rules of Belgian aviation law. That way, you can enjoy your flights without any worries and avoid fines or problems.
