We’re often asked whether a smartphone works with the DJI Mavic Mini or the DJI Mavic Air 2, and it turns out this question isn’t as straightforward as it seems.
Since DJI released its new drone app, DJI Fly, it has become apparent that the app no longer works on just any smartphone or tablet.
For now, one thing is certain: if you have an Apple iPhone or tablet, the app will definitely work. But if you have an Android device, you’ll need to be well prepared and try in advance to see if you can install and open the app; if that doesn’t work, you may have a device that isn’t compatible with the DJI Fly app.
Being able to open the app isn’t the only requirement; some smartphones can open the app but sometimes crash, and that’s obviously not the intention.
We hope DJI will resolve this quickly and effectively, because this is very frustrating.
To help you get started, there are already a few public lists available online where you can find compatible devices, as well as lists of incompatible devices. Here’s a summary:

What are the minimum system requirements for my device?
Two important requirements to get started: first, your smartphone or tablet must be running version 3 of the software, and second, it must be a 64-bit system.
Software version?
- iOS: Requires iOS 10.0 or later.
- Android: Requires Android 6.0 or later.
64-bit?
This requirement applies only to Android-based devices. How can you check this? Download Google’s 64-bit Checker app here.

In addition to this test to determine whether your device is 64-bit, it’s also important that your device’s processor architecture includes the name “ARM.” In the image above, you can see that this is a 64-bit processor with ARM architecture.
Now you can try installing the DJI Fly app. If that works, it’s best to keep your first few flights close to you to make sure everything runs smoothly and stably.
Hopefully, this article will give you a better idea of whether your device will work with this new DJI Fly app.
If you do end up needing a different phone, you might want to consider the DJI Smart Controller for the DJI Mavic Air 2; which has much better display quality and higher contrast than any smartphone or tablet, ensuring you always have a clear view of your screen outdoors in bright sunlight—which is no small thing—and if you’re going to spend the money anyway… Please note: this does not work with the DJI Mavic Mini.
